6 Kitchen Cabinet Mistakes Homeowners Make Before It’s Too Late
Kitchen cabinets are the backbone of any kitchen remodel — yet they’re also where homeowners make the most expensive mistakes. Many of these mistakes don’t show up immediately. They surface months later, when the contractor is long gone and the return window has closed.
At MDC Design Center in Cherry Hill, we’ve talked with thousands of South Jersey homeowners over the years. Here are the six cabinet mistakes we see most often — and exactly how to avoid them.
Mistake 1: Choosing Cabinets Based Only on Appearance
A cabinet door can look beautiful in a showroom photo and still be a disaster in your home. Door style is one factor — but the box construction, drawer slides, and hinge quality determine how your cabinets hold up after five years of daily use.
What to check instead: Open a drawer and close it slowly. Does it soft-close smoothly? Pull it all the way out — is it full extension? Open and close the door. Does the hinge feel solid? These details tell you more than the finish color.
Mistake 2: Ordering Without a Verified Measurement
Cabinet sizing errors are one of the top causes of project delays and additional cost. A wall that measures 120″ in your notes might actually be 118.5″ — and that half inch matters when you’re trying to fit standard cabinet widths.
What to do instead: Measure twice, document every wall, window, and doorway, and bring your floor plan to a cabinet specialist before ordering. At MDC, we review your measurements in the showroom at no charge.
Mistake 3: Skipping Upper Cabinet Height Planning
Standard upper cabinets are 30″ or 36″ tall. Whether you go taller depends on your ceiling height, your trim plan, and how much storage you need. Homeowners who skip this decision often end up with an awkward gap at the ceiling — or upper cabinets that feel short and disconnected.
What to do instead: Decide your upper cabinet height before ordering. If your ceilings are 9′ or higher, 42″ uppers or cabinets-to-ceiling eliminate the awkward gap and add substantial storage.
Mistake 4: Choosing the Wrong Box Material
Cabinet boxes come in two materials: plywood and particleboard. Particleboard is lighter and cheaper — and it swells, sags, and fails much faster when exposed to moisture (which every kitchen has). Plywood boxes last decades longer.
What to ask: “Is this a plywood box or particleboard?” Don’t assume. Budget cabinet lines almost always use particleboard. Mid-range and premium lines use plywood. The cost difference is worth it.
Mistake 5: Ignoring the Inside — Shelves, Organizers, Pull-Outs
Most homeowners focus entirely on what their kitchen looks like. Few think about how it works. A beautiful shaker cabinet with fixed shelves and no pull-outs will frustrate you every single day — things get lost in the back, heavy pots are hard to reach, and corner cabinets become black holes.
What to do instead: Plan your interior organization before ordering. Lazy Susans for corner cabinets, pull-out trash drawers, drawer inserts for utensils, and spice pull-outs make the difference between a kitchen that looks good and one that actually works.
Mistake 6: Waiting Too Long to Order
Custom and semi-custom cabinets have 8–16 week lead times. Homeowners who don’t account for this often delay their entire project — contractors can’t start, countertops can’t be templated, and timelines fall apart.
The in-stock advantage: At MDC Design Center, all our cabinets are warehoused locally in Cherry Hill. You pick your style, we pull it from stock, and your contractor can start the same week. No factory lead times, no waiting.
